  • The Johnson Food Shelf is a 501 c-3, non-profit, organization founded in 1993 and incorporated in 2001. The organization is staffed entirely by volunteers. The food shelf is funded almost entirely by donations from community members, churches, and local businesses. The food shelf purchases and receives some free food from the Vermont Foodbank and from local retail markets. It also receives produce from local farms provided through Salvation Farms. Many community members, churches, schools and local organizations also donate food and supplies. The Johnson Food Shelf is also a participant in TEFAP (Temporary Emergency Food Assistance Program), a federal food program that also serves as a price support to US farmers.   • The primary mission of the Johnson Food Shelf is to provide food relief, supplies, and outreach to people in need. The food shelf will focus outreach to the communities in the five-town area of Belvidere, Eden, Johnson, Hyde Park, and Waterville. No one or family shall be turned away. The Johnson Food Shelf shall not discriminate due to age, (dis)ability, sex, race, sexual orientation, and/or gender. All person(s) shall be treated and served equally.

  • The Johnson Food Shelf is open Tuesdays and Fridays from 9:00 am – 12:00 pm, and
    Wednesdays from 4:00 – 6:00 pm.

  • You do not have to live in Johnson to utilize our services.

  • We ask that people make every effort to come to the food shelf so they can choose the foods
    they want or ask a friend to shop for them. If you cannot arrange this, we try to honor any
    request for home delivery within the 5-town radius of Johnson, Hyde Park, Belvidere, Waterville
    and Eden if we have enough volunteers. Please call at 802-635-9003 to arrange a delivery.

  • Currently, we are serving 300 – 400 people a month, including about 50 seniors and 100 children.

  • You can become a sustaining monthly member or make a one time online dontation right here on this site. Click here to learn more. For cash donations, you can send a check to PO Box 17, Johnson, VT 05656. You can also make donations via Venmo @Johnsonfoodshelf.
    For donations of goods, you can drop them off at the food shelf during our hours of operation
    or call us at 802-635-9003 to arrange a pick up.

  • Yes, we happily take local egg and garden surplus. Our patrons appreciate the local, healthy food!

  • No, the Johnson Food Shelf is staffed 100% by volunteers. Volunteers are needed to pick up donated items, shopping for needed items, stocking shelves, serving clients, making deliveries, and taking care of all the administrative tasks that make the food shelf work. We welcome new volunteers.

  • The Johnson Food Shelf is managed by a Board of Trustees which include the office of President, Vice president (or 2 Co Presidents), Secretary and Treasurer, as well as other members (up to seven Trustees).

  • Yes. No volunteer will share with anyone the names of people who use the food shelf. Patron information, including TEFAP forms, are not shared with other patrons; only food shelf volunteers, who have signed a Confidentiality Agreement, are able to view this information.

  • We take part in TEFAP (The Emergency Food Assistance Program), a federal program through the Vermont Foodbank that provides free food to income-eligible visitors. There's a short form to fill out, and a volunteer can help you complete it during open hours. Just come in.
